GAP had 45 artists in attendance representing many styles and media. This is a photo of some of my paintings that were displayed during the exhibit. Thanks to all who braved the weather to see the beautiful work of our local artists.

Welcome to my blog. I’m Becky Deed, a Texas artist originally from Oklahoma. For many years I painted in a fairly realistic style. My paintings were usually of landscapes, and I always painted with a brush. Today, I enjoy painting in oils using a palette knife and you can see that my style is much more expressionistic.

I was introduced to acrylic and watercolor in college. I wanted to really push myself to learn other mediums and explore other styles. I enjoyed painting with acrylic. It was a new medium for me and I loved the difference in the texture and especially the easy cleanup. I thought I would never return to oils again, but eventually have learned to love oil again.

This particular painting, Unborn Souls, was actually painted while I was in college. The original painting was painted with acrylic using texture medium and tissue paper to add the additional dimension and texture. It is the closest painting I’ve done to abstract, and I loved the outcome. It was one of my favorites and hung in my home for many years.

Unborn Souls (Oil on Canvas)

I called this painting, Unborn Souls, because it represents all those souls who were never given a chance for life. It reminds me of all the love, and contributions that the world has missed by these people never having lived. How different the world might be today if only one of them survived.

I’ve actually painted Unborn Souls twice. The original quickly sold after being represented in a gallery. I was thrilled that someone wanted to buy it, but also regretted losing it. Ironically, someone came in the day it sold to purchase it, and commissioned me to paint another. This time I painted it in oils using a palette knife. Which did I like better? I’d have to say that I loved them both. Although there were definitely subtle differences in the texture, colors and finish, they each succeeded in the result I wanted.

I miss these paintings, but feel satisfaction knowing that two people are enjoying them as much as I did. Maybe they too are haunted by unborn souls.

If you are interested in Unborn Souls and my other paintings, I will be offering prints and note cards on my website soon. http://beckydeed.com/
